We're Open for Business

It's hard to believe the day has finally come. At last, North Deal Community partnership has moved into the wonderful new Golf Road centre. The first of two Open Days is over and we are all tired but happy.

We've had a great time, with lots of visitors arriving throughout the day, all of whom are delighted with the building. The cafe was buzzing and loads of people took advantage of our guided tours. North Deal Community Partnership volunteers did a brilliant job on this, and I think we all had fun too.

Tomorrow is the second day, and we have live music in the afternoon from 2.00 p.m. Visitors can enjoy the art on display too, or even purchase some, if they wish. And of course, we are taking bookings for the Arts and Crafts workshoips for families.

By September there will be even more stuff going on. Watch this space!

Moving day soon

Lots of curious people are watching what is going on in the new Golf Road Centre. We'll be opening the doors for everybody to have a good look on 30th July but before then there is a lot of unpacking, arranging, sorting and stashing to do as we of the previously homeless North Deal Community Partnership take possession of this wonderful new building.

And it is not just us who say it is wonderful. Everybody who has come in so far has been amazed at the quality and elegance of this brand new community facility. A lot of new faces have popped up very recently, enquiring as to whether there are spaces to hire, which bodes well for the future. Any community building is a business underneath so our task now is to get enough users in to fill it up so it pays for itself. And my task is to crunch the numbers, but preferably not till two or three o'clock in the morning!!

TIP Google Outdowns Deal Kent  to find out more about the new houses popping up justoutside our windows but don't bother looking at Googlemaps as that is very out of Date!

What a WASTE

So much to do!

Policies to think about, decide upon, write up and publish. Volunteers to recruit and train. Telephone and broadband, IT resources, waste, cleaning services - all need to be selected, confirmed and details sorted out. Names and signage require decisions, in partnership with Mildvalley. As well as this we are promoting the centre, getting users interested and committed, finding out their needs and meeting them (if possible).

Then there is the first community activities to set up - family arts and crafts through the summer holiday, and money to raise for more activities from September on.

Thank goodness there are lots of us working on this! I look at our CAN DO logo now and again and think just how appropriate it is to describe our group. And it incorporates out initials too... how brilliant is that? My thanks to Ray, who designed it for us over five years ago.

Just show us the money!

Back to the grindstone for a little longer, before I can relax. I have to find a way to raise the funding needed to fill the community centre with all the little extras so we can do good things. Happy to say the building will be furnished when we take it over but we will need to provide IT and media equipment, storage shelves, boxes, trolleys etc ourselves. We also need a centre manager, and that is my task for tomorrow - fill in a grant form to see if Tudor Trust will support this post.

Bad News or Good News - which do you want first?

Sad news - no People's Millions for North Deal. Not even People's Hundreds!

One little bit of good news is that we can still install two little bits of play equipment, three trees and half a path with the match funding of £29k we have already raised. The installation starts next week, so, although it is going to look very measly,  the kids will still get something out of our efforts, in time for the summer holiday.

It's not all bad - although it took a lot of time, and some money, to go for this grant, I am pleased to say that there are more people interested in what we are doing as a result of the campaign. Plus we have gained a few new volunteers to come and work with us in the community centre. That's really good news.

So now it's back to the drawing board for us.Wonder if I need to rebrand my blog now?
